Sheltered housing

In our sheltered housing, we assist residents to retain their independence with the benefit of greater security and peace of mind. If you would like information about our rented retirement schemes in Woking or Hastings, or about leasehold apartments in Eastbourne or Hastings, please contact one of our housing officers.

Our scheme Managers are expected to be professional in their approach to and in the execution of their duties. They are not direct care providers but are expected to act as ‘enablers’. This should result in residents being able to access appropriate services to improve their quality of life and enable them to retain their independence for as long as possible. They are primarily responsible to ensure the well being of the residents in a management role although they can offer short-term support services to residents whilst appropriate services are being organised.

The scheme Manager is required to oversee and supervise the day-to-day running of the scheme including organising repairs, resolving management problems, various administrative procedures and supervising contractors, together with support and assistance to residents.

Scheme Managers are also expected to promote and participate as appropriate in social activities at the scheme and encourage a range of social activities to appeal to various residents’ interests. They are not expected to organise and run all these activities but to enable, encourage and support residents to do so.

scheme Managers are expected to deal with emergencies in the first instance but to hand over to other agencies/families subsequently, as we do not undertake to provide an ongoing nursing service or domestic assistance.

The main direct support scheme Managers are expected to give to residents include:

  • Daily checks where required (except weekends)
  • Home visits
  • Welcoming new residents
  • Offering advice if sought
  • Co-ordinating services and social activities
  • Acting on a resident’s behalf
  • Dealing with problems and complaints
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • Meeting interested tenants and families
  • Showing vacant property and giving a tour of the scheme
  • Dealing with resales at leasehold schemes

A guest room facility is available in the sheltered schemes in Woking. An advance booking needs to be made with the scheme Manager and a small charge is made. If necessary, priority will be given to family or a carer needing to stay on the scheme to care for a resident who is unwell.
